How To Read Daily Abbreviated Reports (DAR)

The DAILY ABBREVIATED REPORT (DAR) (sample report) is the shortest, easiest to read, report created by Positive Territory. It is available via email or on the web site in either plain-text (TXT) or portable document format (PDF). The content is the same in either format.

The DAR comes in two versions, DAR-1M and DAR-HLI. To be listed on DAR-1M each issue has to meet our selection criteria has a SMA(20)(Volume)>= 1,000,000 shares. To be listed on DAR-HLI each issue has to meet our selection criteria and have an HLI >=2,500,000

The plain-text version is easier to read in a fixed pitch font like courier. We send it without formatting to keep the report small for those subscribers who receive the report via narrow bandwidth systems.

The report is in several sections.

UPPER SECTION

The upper section looks like this

Abbreviated Summary for 03/01/2005, issued Wed Jul 27 16:39:19 2005

Symbol  Close  SC;N  AC;N    SMA20vol    ATR  RATR      CCI
LVLT     2.31   3;1   5;2   21,642,600  0.19  8.06%    55.73
OMCL     7.40   3;1   5;3    1,045,680  0.53  7.18%   266.25
LTXX     5.65   3;1   5;2    1,359,780  0.35  6.21%    35.72

Symbol is the symbol of the issue.

Close is the closing price as of the date of the report.

SC;N and AC;N
The "S" stands for the "selection" criteria we are using. For more details see Track Record - How We Choose.

The "A" stands for "all". We compute more than the technical analysis indicators we use for selection. The summary results are reported here. The selection criteria are included in the count of all TAI.

C is short for TCPD, the number of Total Cumulative Positive Developments. This is the sum of technical analysis indicators (TAI) that were already positive before today (and are still positive) PLUS today's new ones. Today's new ones are the Total New Positive Developments or TNPD.

Read that again, TCPDTODAY=TNPDTODAY+TCPDYESTERDAY

N is short for TNPD the number of Total New Positive Developments. This is the sum of technical analysis indicators (TAI) that turned positive today.

Example:

Symbol  Close  SC;N  AC;N
LVLT     2.31   3;1   5;2

Shows that, after market close on 3/1/2005,

For selection criteria there were 3 cumulative of which 1 was new.
For all criteria there were 5 cumulative of which 2 were new.

Remember TCPD includes TNPD.

So 3;1 is not "3 cumulative and 1 new",
    3;1 is "3 cumulative including 1 new"

SMA20Vol is the simple moving average of volume over 20 days.

ATR is the Average True Range

RATR is the Relative Average True Range

CCI Some subscribers use the value of the commodity channel index to refine their selections.

SYMBOLS SECTION

At the bottom of the list is a recap of all the symbols. They are arranged five in a row and separated by commas. This way they are easily cut-and-pasted into other systems for review and analysis saving the time to re-key them.

OTHER RESULTS SECTION

After the symbols there is some summary information about how many issues had what count of TCPD and were selected or not.

xxxx issues had a TCPD count of 3 or more and were selected
xxxx issues had a TCPD count of 3 or more and were not selected
xxxx issues had a TCPD count of 2
xxxx issues had a TCPD count of 1
xxxx issues had a TCPD count of 0
yyyy active issues being tracked
zzzz inactive issues not included
tttt total issues being tracked

The sum of the xxxxs should total to yyyy (active issues).
zzzz are the number of inactive issues. What is an inactive issue?
tttt is the total number of issues with which we are working.

FOOTER SECTION

At the bottom of the report are disclosures, reminders, links to sections of the web site and other notes.

DELIVERY TIMES

Reports should be in the email no later than 6pm US Central time, Monday through Friday. The current report date and time should be shown on the home page. If your email does not arrive you can obtain it from the subscriber-only download section.

UPDATES and REVISIONS

Updated versions (if any) should be in the email by 10pm US Central time, Monday through Friday. Updates are issued because the higher quality data source we use to confirm our data is not available until after 7pm US Central time. Changes are mostly due to a reported volume change. Rarely there are additions or deletions.

In the upper section the far right column will be annotated.

ADDED
Means that this issue was not included in the initial report.

DELETED
Means that this issue was included in the initial report but should not have been. We report it here because if we deleted it no one would see it.

ORIGINAL
This issue was reported in the initial report. Look for a REVISED nearby.

REVISED
This issue was changed from the initial report. Look for an ORIGINAL nearby.

In the symbols section the symbols will be changed to reflect the changes.

In the other results section the numbers should be updated to reflect the changes.

ARCHIVE REPORTS

Old reports should be the same as they were issued with one difference. For the plain-text versions the revised report is appended to the original report. So the one file contains the original report at the top followed by the updated report. This is so that subscribers who are back checking won't miss an update.

Archive reports older than 90-days or so may be available only in a compressed format containing multiple reports. Subscribers may access archived reports in the download section.
